Everyone loves a good story. The best stories are often a long way off from the facts. Speak to ‘what’s so’ and not guessing or making assumptions is safer ground to be anchored in. Speaking from facts take emotion out of confrontational messages or situations, or at least provides common ground. If people know and align on the facts, it’s a good way to step forward.

4. Clarity

Be clear in your use of language so that you are not misinterpreted. Avoid ambiguous language. If you don’t know something, say you don’t know. Authentic communication is about being clear about what you don’t know, and this might demonstrate vulnerability. People are more likely to rally to your support.

5. Speak to the listening

Gauge the mood of your audience. Authentic communication is about sensing the listening you have and speaking into the listening. The opposite is just keeping on message and wondering why people did not get what you were seeking to communicate.

6. Be respectful

Authentic communication often requires the speaker standing in the shoes of the audience. Speak to their concerns, their world view. Honouring and acknowledging their world view will demonstrate you care and respect their perspective.

7. Build sufficient relationship

Authentic leaders build trust. This often means communicating your stand, saying what you will do about it and delivering. When people experience you this way, your word will be trusted.

8. Keep your promises

9. Create shared understanding

Most people make assumptions, we assume that others see the world as we see the world. Check understanding regularly and when you see gaps, seek to provide what others need to deepen their understanding of the subject. This if very helpful if you are seeking alignment.

10. Know what triggers you

We all have perceptions, judgements and prejudices. Knowing yours will help you navigate communication authentically. We all have obstacles to our communication, the more we build our self-awareness the less likely we will be caught off guard.
